With over 25 years of visionary leadership, Dr. Kam Ghaffarian is a successful entrepreneur dedicated to creating a company focused on employee well-being and operating with the highest integrity, while delivering the best technical solutions to his customers. Dr. Ghaffarian’s technical experience is in the fields of aerospace systems engineering and information technology. His accomplishments and success can be attributed to his commitment to education. He has obtained two Bachelors of Science degrees including a B.S. in Computer Science in Engineering and a B.S. in Electronics Engineering, a Masters of Science in Information Management, and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems.

Having served as Engineering Director and Deputy Center Director, he led Johnson Space Center capabilities developments in support of Human Spaceflight Programs. Steve is a visionary and accomplished leader with an intuitive ability to formulate and execute insightful strategic initiatives, sound organizational strategies, and technical solutions that drive excellence.

Dr. Tim Crain joins the Intuitive Machines after 12 years of experience as a leading engineer at the Johnson Space Center’s Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division. Tim brings to the team vast experience in Guidance Navigation and Control in a lean environment. His passion for making big data accessible in an intuitive way to the user combined with in-depth flight GN&C brings a strong research and development capability to the IM team.

The Name

Intuition Explained

Intuition, or tacit knowledge, is difficult to measure, so it is often denigrated. However new education research shows that there is a neuro-biological explanation for how experience-based knowledge is created.


Intuition is based on experience and is something that experts in many fields possess.

In studies from the 1980s, it was shown that those who had been in their profession for a long time saw a significant improvement in snap judgments. It was referred to as an intuitive ability. In the 1990s similar studies were done on physicians and business people, with similar results. The fact that people with long experience are often better at what they do, that practice makes perfect, is nothing new. The more variations of a situation we have experienced, the richer our picture book will be and the more probable it will be that we recognize the situation at hand.

This means that we can never read or calculate our way to all the knowledge and abilities we need in our professional life. Practical experience is indispensable and needs to be reevaluated. A non-certified teacher with ten years of experience in the profession can be a much better teacher than a newly certified teacher, no matter how knowledgeable he or she is in terms of subject matter knowledge.

It is with this idea of intuition from practical experience that “Intuitive Machines” was formed; from deep experience in large complex space systems development.  The people of Intuitive Machines blend deep technical knowledge with practices honed over 40 years of human spaceflight; practices in risk-based decision-making, redundancy management, fault tolerance and isolation, safety, reliability, maintainability, verification testing, and operations.

As an engineering design and development think tank, we provide products and solutions that employ a “flight proven” lean engineering development model. Our rapid iterative design-build-test capability significantly lowers development costs, and shortens the development cycle, while increasing the probability of success of any project.
